Conservation at HZAA

Conservation is at the core of Hobart Zoo and Aquarium’s purpose, informing every aspect of our work — from animal care and habitat design to education, research, and community engagement. Located in Tasmania, a region globally recognised for its extraordinary and vulnerable biodiversity, HZAA is committed to the protection and preservation of wildlife at both local and global levels.

Through evidence-based conservation programs, collaborative partnerships, and immersive learning experiences, we strive to foster meaningful connections between people and the natural world. Guided by the values of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), HZAA is not only a place to encounter wildlife, but an organisation actively contributing to the protection of species, habitats, and ecosystems for future generations.

Six Pillars Explained

Our Six Pillars of Conservation form the foundation of how HZAA approaches wildlife care, environmental responsibility, education, and community impact.

They represent the key areas where we believe zoos can make a meaningful difference – from protecting species and habitats to inspiring people, supporting sustainability, and strengthening the connection between wildlife and the wider community. Together, these pillars help shape the future of conservation at HZAA.

Conservation Partnerships

At HZAA, conservation is strengthened through collaboration. We work alongside schools, community groups, wildlife organisations, and other partners to support meaningful conservation outcomes, share knowledge, and inspire positive action for wildlife and the environment.

By building strong partnerships, we can extend the impact of our conservation work beyond the zoo and into the wider community.
