Capybaras Have Arrived at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium

Exciting news — our capybaras have arrived at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium! We’re delighted to welcome the world’s largest rodents to their new home. Come and meet them during your next visit, and stay tuned for updates about our exciting new capybara encounter!

In the wild

Native to South America, capybaras live near rivers, lakes, wetlands, and grassy areas. They are excellent swimmers and use their partially webbed feet to move easily through the water.

Capybaras can even remain underwater for up to five minutes, helping them stay cool and escape predators.

How We’ll Care for Our Capybaras at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium

    A Place to Swim

    Capybaras love the water! Their new home will provide space to swim, cool off, and enjoy the natural behaviours that keep them happy and healthy.

    Grazing and Foraging

    These gentle herbivores enjoy grasses, hay, and leafy greens. A varied diet and enrichment activities will encourage natural grazing and exploration.

    Capybaras are highly social animals that thrive together. Living in a group allows them to relax, interact, and form the close bonds they love.
