Southern Wombats

Southern Wombats at Hobart Zoo & Aquarium

Built like a bulldozer and as loveable as a teddy bear, the Southern (Common) Wombat is one of Australia’s most iconic marsupials. With their chunky bodies, backwards-facing pouches, and surprising speed, these stubborn diggers are true masters of life underground.

In the wild

Native to southeastern Australia and Tasmania, wombats create complex burrow systems and graze on grasses and roots. Their thick rump even acts as a natural shield when reversing into a burrow to block predators!

How We Care for Our Wombats

  1. Placeholder (1)

    Tough Grazers

Our wombats enjoy a fibre-rich diet of native grasses, veggies, and specially formulated pellets to keep their digestion on track.

    Dig Like a Pro

Their exhibit includes soft soil, logs, and tunnels so they can burrow, hide, and relax just like in the wild.

    Peace and Quiet

Wombats are crepuscular (most active at dawn and dusk), so we provide shady hideouts for their daytime naps.

Don’t let their waddle fool you—these chunky charmers can sprint up to 40km/h when they’re in the mood! Come see them in action at Hobart Zoo & Aquarium.
