Southern Koalas
Southern Koalas at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo
Sleepy, cuddly-looking, and unmistakably Australian—Southern Koalas are one of our most iconic marsupials. With their thick grey fur, round ears, and button noses, they spend most of their lives in the treetops, snoozing the day away and snacking on eucalyptus leaves.
In the wild
Southern Koalas are found in the cooler forests of Victoria and South Australia, and are slightly larger and fluffier than their northern relatives. Despite their relaxed appearance, koalas are fussy eaters with a highly specialised diet and strong territorial instincts.
At Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo, our koalas enjoy a calm, elevated environment that supports their natural tree-dwelling lifestyle—designed with both their comfort and conservation in mind.
How We Keep Our Koalas Thriving
-
Fresh Eucalyptus Daily
Koalas are provided with hand-selected eucalyptus branches, sourced fresh each day to ensure variety and quality—just the way they like it.
-
Tree-Top Comfort
With raised platforms, forked branches, and shaded rest spots, our habitat lets koalas climb, stretch, and sleep just like they would in the wild.
-
Quiet Spaces
Koalas are sensitive to noise and change, so their exhibit is designed with peace and routine in mind, helping reduce stress and support their health.
🐾 Come and quietly observe these laid-back legends at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo. They may be still, but their story is powerful—and one of Australia’s most treasured wildlife experiences.
