Red-tailed Black Cockatoo
Red-tailed Black Cockatoo at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium
Striking, intelligent, and full of personality—our Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, Jack, is a true crowd favourite. With his glossy black feathers, bright red tail panels, and playful nature, Jack never fails to charm both visitors and staff alike. His love for almonds (especially when Stuart brings them out!) is matched only by his love for making new friends.
In the wild
Native to northern and eastern Australia, Red-tailed Black Cockatoos inhabit woodlands, forests, and shrublands, often near water sources. They live in pairs or small flocks, using their strong beaks to crack open hard nuts and seeds. Known for their loud calls and graceful flight, they are important seed dispersers in their ecosystems.
How We Care for Jack at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium
-
Spacious Aviary
Jack’s enclosure is designed with plenty of perches, branches, and flight space, allowing him to stretch his wings, climb, and explore at his leisure.
-
Enrichment & Training
To keep Jack’s sharp mind active, our keepers provide daily enrichment such as puzzle feeders, hidden treats, and interactive training sessions—often involving his favourite reward: almonds.
-
Social Connection
Jack is a naturally social bird and thrives on interaction with both keepers and visitors. He loves to vocalise, mimic sounds, and spend time making new friends, which helps keep him happy and engaged.
