In the wild

Plains Zebras are found in grasslands, shrublands, and open plains across eastern and southern Africa, where they often travel in herds and play a key role in the ecosystem. Their strong social bonds and constant awareness make them highly adaptive and alert.

At Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo, our zebras live in a spacious habitat designed to reflect the openness of the African plains—giving them room to roam, graze, and interact naturally.

Grazing Opportunities

Zebras are natural grazers, so we provide fresh grass, hay, and browse throughout the day to support constant, healthy foraging.

We introduce natural scents, logs, scratching posts, and feeding puzzles to encourage movement, curiosity, and herd interaction.
Gentle Health Monitoring

Our zebras are gradually conditioned to engage in basic husbandry—like stepping onto scales—through positive reinforcement and daily observation.
