Ostriches at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo

Tall, powerful, and always alert, ostriches are the largest birds on the planet. With their long legs, strong necks, and massive eyes, these flightless giants are built for speed and survival on the African savanna.

In the wild

Native to Africa’s open plains and desert edges, ostriches can sprint up to 70 km/h and deliver a powerful kick when threatened. Though they can’t fly, their wings help with balance and communication—and their feathers are soft and fluffy, unlike any other bird.

At Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo, our ostriches share a large, naturalistic space with other African species, allowing visitors to observe their bold behaviour and curious nature up close.

How We Keep Our Ostriches Thriving

    Natural Foragers

Ostriches are omnivores, and their diet includes grasses, seeds, vegetables, and occasional insects, offered in scattered feeding stations to promote movement and exploration.

  2. Placeholder (1)

    Space to Stride

Their habitat includes plenty of open ground for walking, dust bathing, and stretching their legs, just like in the wild.

    Daily Enrichment

From mirrors and textured objects to scent trails and shaded areas, we keep our ostriches engaged and stimulated.
