Dromedary Camels
Dromedary Camels at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo
With their long legs, calm gaze, and signature single hump, Dromedary Camels are built for survival in some of the harshest environments on Earth. Often called the “ships of the desert,” these incredible animals have been vital to life in arid regions for thousands of years.
In the wild
Native to the Middle East and North Africa, dromedaries are now found in the wild across Australia as well—forming the world’s largest population of feral camels. Their humps store fat (not water!), which fuels them during long treks across dry landscapes.
At Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo, our camels enjoy a spacious habitat where they can roam, rest, and interact with both keepers and guests.
How We Keep Our Camels Thriving
-
High-Fibre Feeds
Camels are browsers and grazers, enjoying a diet of hay, native grasses, pellets, and leafy branches to support their unique digestive systems.
-
Enrichment Through Movement
From walks with keepers to hanging feeders and scratching posts, our camels stay active, curious, and well-exercised.
-
Gentle Encounters
With their calm nature, camels are part of our up-close experiences, where guests can learn more about their biology, behaviour, and desert adaptations.
🐾 Come meet our desert giants at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo. With their quirky charm and slow, steady stride, Dromedary Camels are always a favourite with guests of all ages.
