Cotton-top Tamarins
Cotton-top Tamarins at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo
Tiny, expressive, and wildly unique—Cotton-top Tamarins are one of the most endangered primates in the world. Easily recognised by their striking white crest of hair, these miniature monkeys are full of energy, constantly communicating with chirps, whistles, and squeaks.
In the wild
Native to the tropical forests of northwestern Colombia, Cotton-top Tamarins are highly social and live in family groups, working together to care for young and watch for danger. They’re agile climbers, leaping from branch to branch in the mid-canopy of the forest.
How We Care for Our Tamarins at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium
-
Vertical Playground
Their exhibit includes elevated pathways, climbing ropes, and leafy branches, designed to mimic their natural rainforest habitat and promote movement.
-
Foraging Enrichment
Tamarins enjoy a diet of fruit, insects, eggs, and nectar, offered in puzzle feeders and hidden spaces to encourage exploration and mental stimulation.
-
Family-Centered Care
Our tamarins live in close-knit groups that support grooming, vocal interaction, and cooperative parenting, all crucial to their natural behaviour and wellbeing.
