Cape Porcupines at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium
Spiky, strong, and surprisingly full of character—our Cape Porcupines are one of the most fascinating residents at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium. With their impressive quills, curious personalities, and growing confidence, they have quickly become a highlight for visitors of all ages.
In the wild
Cape Porcupines are the largest porcupine species in the world and are found throughout central and southern Africa. Nocturnal by nature, they spend their nights foraging for roots, tubers, fruit, and bark. Their most famous feature—the long, sharp quills—are used as a powerful defense against predators. When threatened, they rattle their hollow quills to produce a warning sound before charging backward to deter danger.
How We Care for Our Cape Porcupines at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium
-
Enrichment & Training
Our dedicated keepers provide regular enrichment sessions that encourage natural behaviours like foraging and exploring. Through training, the porcupines have grown more confident, curious, and comfortable in their environment.
-
Spacious Habitat
Their enclosure is designed with logs, burrows, and foraging opportunities, giving them plenty of space to explore and display their natural behaviours.
-
Daily Care & Diet
The porcupines enjoy a varied diet of vegetables, roots, and specially prepared treats. Keepers often present food in creative ways—hidden in logs or puzzle feeders—to keep them mentally stimulated.
