In the wild

In the wild, they form strong pair bonds and fly in small flocks through the treetops of the Amazon Basin, feeding on fruit, nuts, seeds, and bark. At Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo, our macaws live in a dynamic aviary designed to support their curious minds and social nature—with high perches, interactive spaces, and plenty to explore.

How We Keep Our Macaws Thriving

Foraging Fun

We provide a mix of fruits, nuts, vegetables, and puzzle feeders to encourage natural foraging behaviours and beak use.
Enrichment Galore

Macaws love to play! They’re given ropes, swings, shred able toys, and even mirrors to stimulate their minds and encourage social interaction.
Interactive Training

Through positive reinforcement, our macaws participate in gentle husbandry training—like target touches and stepping onto scales—which helps us monitor their health without stress.
