Black-capped Capuchins at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo
Smart, strong, and incredibly resourceful—Black-capped Capuchins (also known as tufted capuchins) are one of the most intelligent monkeys in the animal kingdom. With their distinctive dark caps, expressive faces, and tool-using behaviour, they never fail to impress.
In the wild
Native to the forests of South America, including Brazil, Peru, and northern Argentina, these primates are expert foragers known for their problem-solving skills. In the wild, they’ve been observed using sticks, stones, and leaves to access food—true jungle innovators!
How We Care for Our Capuchins at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium
-
Enrichment Experts
Their habitat is filled with ropes, platforms, climbing structures, and puzzle feeders, encouraging physical agility and mental stimulation.
-
Tool Time
Capuchins are natural problem solvers, so we provide enrichment that allows them to manipulate, explore, and “figure out” challenges, just as they would in the wild.
-
Social Dynamics
These monkeys thrive in small, structured groups, where they groom, communicate, and learn from one another—key to maintaining social wellbeing.
🐾 Come see these clever primates in action—Black-capped Capuchins will surprise you with their curiosity, creativity, and brainpower, right here at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo.
