Alpacas at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo

Fluffy, friendly, and full of personality—alpacas are one of the most beloved animals at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo. With their soft fleece, gentle eyes, and curious nature, these South American natives win hearts wherever they go.

In the wild

Originally from the Andes Mountains of Peru, Bolivia, and Chile, alpacas were domesticated thousands of years ago for their luxurious wool. Social and alert, they communicate with body language, humming sounds, and the occasional spit to sort out pecking order!

At Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo, our alpacas live in peaceful paddocks where guests can get up close and even hand-feed them in a calm, interactive setting.

    Calm & Comfortable

With open paddocks, shady shelters, and soft ground, our alpacas can roam, rest, and roll as they please—just like in the highlands they evolved in.
