Year 5 -Tools of The Trade
Year 5 students investigate how structural features and behaviours help animals survive in their environments. Using birds as a focus, students explore how physical adaptations such as beak shape, feathers and claws function as specialised tools that support feeding, protection and survival.
Through inquiry-based learning and hands-on investigation, students test how different beak shapes suit different food sources, collect data, identify patterns and draw evidence-based conclusions. This program strengthens scientific thinking while connecting classroom learning to real-world observation.
Learning Outcomes
Students will learn to:
-
Identify structural and behavioural adaptations that support survival
-
Explain how bird beak shape relates to diet and habitat
-
Conduct fair tests and collect observational data
-
Analyse patterns and relationships in results
-
Communicate findings using scientific language and representations
By the end of the unit, students can explain how form and behaviour enable survival and describe patterns in data using evidence-based reasoning.
