Year 4 -Who Eats Who?
Year 4 students explore how living things are connected through food chains and how energy moves between organisms within ecosystems. They learn the roles of producers, consumers and decomposers and investigate how these relationships support balance in habitats.
Through inquiry, discussion and hands-on activities, students construct and label food chains using Tasmanian species and examine how changes to one part of an ecosystem can affect the whole system. They also explore the ecological role of Tasmanian devils and how conservation efforts support their survival.
Learning Outcomes
Students will learn to:
-
Identify producers, consumers and decomposers and explain their roles
-
Describe how energy flows through a food chain
-
Sequence organisms correctly in a food chain
-
Construct labelled diagrams showing feeding relationships
-
Explain how Tasmanian devils contribute to ecosystems
-
Recognise how environmental changes affect food chains
By the end of the unit, students can construct food chains, identify organism roles within habitats, and communicate scientific ideas using appropriate vocabulary and representations.
