Year 1 -Tasmanians Who Survive and Thrive

Program Overview

Year 1 students explore what it means for animals to be native to Tasmania and how living things survive in their environments. Through sorting, discussion and hands-on learning tasks, students investigate how habitats provide animals with what they need to live, including food, water, air and shelter.

Students also learn how scientists observe, compare and communicate information about animals, developing early scientific thinking and inquiry skills while connecting learning to real Tasmanian wildlife examples.

Learning Outcomes

Students will learn to:

  • Explain what “native” means using Tasmanian examples

  • Identify what animals need to survive

  • Describe how habitats meet animals’ needs

  • Communicate their understanding through drawings, models or simple reports

By the end of the unit, students can identify how living things meet their needs in the places they live and share their ideas using everyday and scientific language.
