Wild Turkeys
Wild Turkeys at Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo
Bold, curious, and surprisingly graceful, Wild Turkeys are far more impressive than their farmyard cousins. With their bronze-feathered bodies, fan-shaped tails, and bright red wattles, these birds are full of personality—and they know it!
In the wild
Native to North America, wild turkeys roam woodlands, forests, and grasslands in flocks called rafters. They are strong walkers, capable flyers, and have excellent eyesight—making them surprisingly hard to sneak up on.
At Hobart Zoo and Aquarium Zoo, our wild turkeys live in a naturalistic habitat designed to encourage their active lifestyles and showcase their curious, social behaviour.
How We Keep Our Wild Turkeys Thriving
-
Natural Diet
They enjoy a mix of grains, seeds, insects, fruits, and greens, with foraging trays and scattered feed to mimic wild ground-feeding behaviours.
-
Space to Roam and Roost
Our turkeys have open ground to explore and shaded perches to rest, preen, and observe their surroundings.
-
Seasonal Enrichment
From leaf piles and branches to mirrors and treat logs, our turkeys are kept active and stimulated all year round.
🐾 Stop by and meet Hobart Zoo and Aquarium’s wild turkeys—you’ll be surprised by their confidence, charm, and strut! These birds are clever, social, and full of character.
